2004 WTA Champion Maria Sharapova lifted to a career high #4 position in the WTA Rankings with 3536 points.


Maria, ranked #32 last year, made a remarkable rise and passed fellow Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva.


"It just shows that I have come a long way in a short period of time," Maria said. "It is just really unbelievable."

Maria won her fifth final this year by defeating Serena Williams of the USA in a 106 minutes lasting match: 4-6 6-2 6-4.



"I don't think I could've asked for anything better this year," Maria said. "It's been an extraordinary year for me. I know that I'm not showing a lot of emotion, but I'm sort of just speechless."

Maria is trough to the 2004 WTA Tour Championships final after defeating fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina in a 106 minutes lasting match: 6:2 2:6 2:6


In the final Maria will play Serena Williams who won earlier today over Amelie Mauresmo of France: 4-6 7-6 6-4


Maria will face her 6th final this year and it will be the third time she plays Serena Williams.

The final will be played tomorrow 21.30 Pacific time.
