Defending champion Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Zurich Open, which starts Monday, due to a lingering shoulder injury.

The fourth-ranked Russian announced the withdrawal on her Web site Sunday.

Sharapova will also miss the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria, starting Oct. 22, which she also won last year.

On Wednesday, Sharapova lost to teenager Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (9), 6-2 in the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

It was her first match in six weeks since her defeat in the third round of the U.S. Open.

finally maria you are thinking straight, i'm so glad you are taking the time to heal your injuries. playing when you are hurt is not the smartest choice, and who cares if you qualify for madrid or not the priority here is to get healthy so you don't loose to the 32nd ranked players. if you are going to loose a match let it be in the semis or finals not the third or first rounds. you are a much better player than that. good for you that you realized that healing is the only option at this point. good luck and god bless!

You can't blame maria because i think she can't play well because of her injury and her decision for not playing in zunich and linz is good for her and she need some rest... Just rest maria... I love you!
