Wimbledon Draw released

The draw for Wimbledon has been released and Maria is the #2 seed and will face Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Tapei in the 1st round.  Maria has played Chan once before at Miami in March on hardcourts and won in straight sets.  This match will be played on Tuesday.  Maria's possible 2nd round opponent could be either Severine Bremond of France or Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia.  The 1st seed Maria can meet is #26 seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan.

Maria can meet either #13 seed Dinara Safina or #13 seed Venus Williams in the 4th round.  #5 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova is Maria's seeded opponent in the quarters.  In the semis Maria could face defending champion Amelie Mauresmo.

Top seed Justine Henin, 2002 and 2003 champion Serena Williams, #3 seed Jelena Jankovic and 1997 champion Martina Hingis round off the draw in the top half.

Wimbledon is the 3rd Grand Slam of the year and is the only Grand Slam played on grass and ends the very short grass court season.  Wimbledon is the only tournament in the world were there is a dress code, all players have to wear white.

Maria has a great record here having won the event in 2004 and reached the semis the last 2 years.  Maria made her debut here in 2003 by reaching the 4th round as a wildcard.
